Barnet Shul prides itself on being a friendly, inclusive and helpful community. Chesed (meaning ‘kindness to others’) is a fundamental cornerstone of our ethos. Barnet Cares is made up of a Core Team along with a group of wonderful volunteers supporting members who are in-need within our community.
Some of the areas Barnet Cares cover:
- Signposting to Jewish support charities and organisations across a wide range of services such as bereavement, cancer care, autism, social care, infertility, financial challenges, mental health, domestic violence and many more. See our Chesed Resource Sheet here.
- Purim Mishloach Manot and Rosh Hashana Parcels – hand delivering parcels to local seniors in our community.
- Calls to the Bereaved post shiva, at end of Shloshim and at first year Yahrzeit.
- ‘Monday Social’ – a monthly social group for seniors (both members and non-Barnet members) offering a range of activities in the morning, followed by a 3 course lunch, a speaker/entertainment and then tea & cakes. See ShabbatOn for details.
- US Essential Pesach Food Parcels & Weekly Food Parcels arranged (confidentially) by our core Barnet Cares team via the US for members in the community struggling financially.
- Purim – Yearly fundraising for struggling members in our own community. Delivered personally (and confidentially) by the Rabbi on the day of Purim.
- Befriending –Matching volunteers as a befrienders to senior/housebound members in the community. This is normally done by phone, but sometimes with visits (with appropriate DBS checks and H&S guidance).
- Calling Isolated/Unwell/Vulnerable Members– The Core Barnet Cares team, along with the Rabbinical couple where appropriate, call members and give support either on a short or longer term basis.
If you are aware of any member who is struggling – either with poor health (themselves or a family member/spouse), financially, emotionally or with isolation or loneliness – please do let Barnet Cares know by email on barnetcares@barnetshul.com or call the shul office or when you see Justine, Verna or Natalie in shul.
And if you’re interested in joining our wonderful Barnet Cares volunteer team, please email or call us. We’d love to hear from you!
